Results and Scoring Criteria

This year marks 109 years of fine clock making at Chelsea Clock.  During this period, more than 1,000,000 clocks have been crafted by master clock makers in Chelsea, Massachusetts.  The American clock tradition is unique to only two companies who make their own movements:  Chelsea for their Ship’s Bell movements and Herscheda for Grandfather clock movements.  Chelsea has one fundamental philosophy.  Each clock must represent quality and value.  Over the past century, the Chelsea name has become synonymous with classic American design, value and enduring quality.

1. Fleet Performance (10 points possible): The class winners will be compared to each other and assigned points based on the boat’s adjusted Average Corrected Speed for the week (ACS). The ACS will be calculated after discarding the 2 races with the best and worst corrected speeds.

The ACS will then be adjusted based on the rating band each boat falls in. (Reason for the adjustment: PHRF handicaps are assigned and have been refined over time in part based on how the boat performs against similar sized boats (boats they would routinely compete against). Rarely does a Farr 60 race against a T-10, hence those relative handicaps have not been considered. Studies of Key West PHRF racing, accessing average corrected boat speed for the series, have shown quite clearly that the smaller boats in fleet have a less competitive handicap than larger boats when they are rated together.

2. Class Competitiveness (10 points possible): The class winners will be compared to one another and assigned points based on how competitive the racing was in the respective PHRF classes. This will be determined by accounting for two factors;

a) The average corrected time between the 1st and 5th place finishers discarding the 2 races with the least and most time between 1st and 5th (7 points);
b) The size of the class and number of boats the class winner beat during the
series (3 points)
 

SCORING FORMULAS

1. Fleet Performance (10 points possible)

Average Corrected Speed for the Week (ACS):
Corrected Speed for a Race (CSR) = Distance Sailed / Corrected Time (in hours)

ACS for the week = (CSR – Best CSR – Worse CSR) / (# of Races Sailed by Class – 2)

Rating Band Adjustment to ACS: (Updated: 1/13/07 after final bands were determined).

2. Class Competitiveness (10 points possible)

Time Between 1st and 5th (7 points):

Average Corrected Time Between 1st & 5th = (corrected time in seconds between 1st and 5th place each race – Least Time – Greatest Time) / (# of Races Sailed by Class – 2)

Points Allocated for Fleet Performance Ranking:

1st 7.0
2nd 6.8

4th 6.4

Each place thereafter awarded points = 6.3 – (place-5) x 0.1
 

Class Size and Number of Boats Beaten (3 points)
Based on the total number of competitors beaten during the course of the week

Class size factor = 3.0 (largest class), 2.9 (next largest class), and -0.1 for each smaller class

Class Size Performance Factor =
Class size factor x (total number of boats beaten) / (number of boats possible to beat)
