2007 PHRF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Results and Scoring Criteria

Updated - January 23, 2007

PHRF National Championship

First, Second and Third place winners received  beautiful Chelsea Clocks!

This year marks 109 years of fine clock making at Chelsea Clock.  During this period, more than 1,000,000 clocks have been crafted by master clock makers in Chelsea, Massachusetts.  The American clock tradition is unique to only two companies who make their own movements:  Chelsea for their Ship’s Bell movements and Herscheda for Grandfather clock movements.  Chelsea has one fundamental philosophy.  Each clock must represent quality and value.  Over the past century, the Chelsea name has become synonymous with classic American design, value and enduring quality.

PHRF National Championship (Final Results)

1. NKE Electronics, Beneteau 10R, Bobby Oberg, Annapolis, Md.

2. Rhumb Punch, J/29, John and Linda Edwards, Solomon's Island, Md.

3. AS IF, SR-33, Jeff Kitterman, Kemah, Texas

The competition was extremely tight between Rhumb Punch (PHRF 5 - Linda and John Edwards’ J/29) and NKE Electronics  (PHRF 3 – Robert Oberg’s Beneteau 10R) with Rhumb Punch having the best average corrected speed for the week and NKE Electronnics the best class competitiveness factors.

The Average Corrected Speed in knots was determined by taking the distance and dividing by corrected time in hours for each race, then discarding the best and worst performance for the week before taking the average.  For the two leaders this worked out to be:

Rhumb Punch: 5.2658 knots (1st of the 6 classes)

NKE Electronics: 5.2053 knots (3rd of the 6 classes)

The Class Competitiveness factor was determined from two separate calculations, the first involving the average corrected time differentials between first and fifth place and the second based on class size and number of boats beaten out of the total possible number of boats to beat.

The average difference in seconds between the first and fifth place boats in class was determined by taking the corrected time difference for each race, then discarding the largest and the smallest difference before calculating the average.  For the two leaders this was:

NKE Electronics: 148.7 seconds (1st of the 6 classes)

Rhumb Punch: 220.0 seconds (5th of the 6 classes)

The average class factor was determined by ranking the classes from largest to smallest, then multiplying the ranking by the number of boats beaten by the number of boats possible to beat.  For the two leaders this was:

NKE Electronics: 2.7778 (1st of the 6 classes)

Rhumb Punch: 2.6625 (2nd of the 6 classes)

The above numbers were then used to rank the winners of each PHRF class in order from first through sixth for each of the factors and the final calculation done using the ranking assignment factors published below on the PHRF National Championship Web Page.

  ELIGIBILITY
Entrant must meet the eligibility criteria for PHRF racing and win their respective PHRF class at Acura Key West 2007

CHAMPIONSHIP SCORING OVERVIEW
The winner will have the highest point total calculated using the following scoring factors:

Scoring Factors

1. Fleet Performance using average corrected speed

(adjusted for boat size / rating bands)

Max Points

10.0

2. Class Competitiveness measuring relative competitiveness
of classes using time between 1st and 5th place finishers and
the number of boats in class and boats beaten

10.0

Maximum Total:

20.0

1. Fleet Performance (10 points possible): The class winners will be compared to each other and assigned points based on the boat’s adjusted Average Corrected Speed for the week (ACS). The ACS will be calculated after discarding the 2 races with the best and worst corrected speeds.

The ACS will then be adjusted based on the rating band each boat falls in. (Reason for the adjustment: PHRF handicaps are assigned and have been refined over time in part based on how the boat performs against similar sized boats (boats they would routinely compete against). Rarely does a Farr 60 race against a T-10, hence those relative handicaps have not been considered. Studies of Key West PHRF racing, accessing average corrected boat speed for the series, have shown quite clearly that the smaller boats in fleet have a less competitive handicap than larger boats when they are rated together.

2. Class Competitiveness (10 points possible): The class winners will be compared to one another and assigned points based on how competitive the racing was in the respective PHRF classes. This will be determined by accounting for two factors;

a) The average corrected time between the 1st and 5th place finishers discarding the 2 races with the least and most time between 1st and 5th (7 points);
b) The size of the class and number of boats the class winner beat during the
series (3 points)

SCORING FORMULAS

1. Fleet Performance (10 points possible)

Average Corrected Speed for the Week (ACS):
Corrected Speed for a Race (CSR) = Distance Sailed / Corrected Time (in hours)

ACS for the week = (CSR – Best CSR – Worse CSR) / (# of Races Sailed by Class – 2)

Rating Band Adjustment to ACS: (Updated: 1/13/07 after final bands were determined).

-40 to 0         0.96

0 to 102        1.00

103 to 135    1.02

136 to 170    1.04

Points Allocated for Fleet Performance Ranking:

1st      10.0
2nd       9.6
3rd        9.3
4th        9.1
5th        9.0
Each place thereafter awarded points = 9 – (place-5) x (0.1)

2. Class Competitiveness (10 points possible)

Time Between 1st and 5th (7 points):

Average Corrected Time Between 1st & 5th = (corrected time in seconds between 1st and 5th place each race – Least Time – Greatest Time) / (# of Races Sailed by Class – 2)

Points Allocated for Fleet Performance Ranking:

1st 7.0
2nd 6.8
3rd 6.6
4th 6.4
5th 6.3
Each place thereafter awarded points = 6.3 – (place-5) x 0.1

Class Size and Number of Boats Beaten (3 points)
Based on the total number of competitors beaten during the course of the week

Class size factor = 3.0 (largest class), 2.9 (next largest class), and -0.1 for each smaller class

Class Size Performance Factor =
Class size factor x (total number of boats beaten) / (number of boats possible to beat)
